We’re thrilled to announce that Hickory Museum of Art has been selected as the North Carolina host site for the National Scrollathon — a visionary community art project by acclaimed artists William and Stephen Ladd, created in honor of America’s 250th anniversary in 2026.

Join us for one of our inspiring, hands-on workshops and contribute to a powerful, nationwide collaborative artwork. Each one-hour session gives participants the opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind commemorative scroll to take home, while also contributing to a monumental installation that will be unveiled in Washington, D.C. in 2026. We are honored to welcome William and Stephen to Hickory, where they will personally lead these special workshops.

Participation is FREE, but advance registration is required.

What Is the National Scrollathon?

The National Scrollathon is America’s Cultural Project for the 250th anniversary of our country — a living portrait of creativity, resilience, and connection. The goal is simple: to unite America through storytelling and community.

Scrollathon workshops are being held in all 50 states and US territories, bringing people together to create fabric scrolls — each one a personal story and piece of a much larger, collective artwork. The collaborative projects will travel to Washington, DC to be part of a major exhibition on view at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts beginning Memorial Day 2026 through Labor Day 2026.

About the Artists: William and Stephen Ladd

The Ladd brothers are New York-based artists whose work blends textile sculpture, storytelling, and social engagement. They’ve led Scrollathon workshops in museums, schools, community centers, and correctional facilities across the country. Their approach is joyful, inclusive, and deeply moving — empowering participants to express their stories while contributing to a meaningful national artwork.
