329 Miles of Coral Reef Conservation: an Art and Science Collaboration

This project is supported by a grant from the United Arts Council of Catawba County.

Recently, Catawba Science Center (CSC) and Hickory Museum of Art (HMA) had the unique opportunity to create collaborative programming tied to CSC’s Coral Reef Tank in the Land to Sea exhibit and Aquarium along with HMA’s Mel Chin: SEA to SEE exhibition. Through the Collaborative Arts Project grant awarded by the United Arts Council of Catawba County, the two organizations created programs to give visitors the opportunity to engage with Shari Regenbogen Ross, an artist, environmentalist, and creator of Coral Crusaders. Through her work, she informs, motivates, and inspires people to gain a greater understanding of the positive impact that people can make to support the health of our ocean ecosystems.

Over the span of three days, guests had the opportunity to participate in the Community Coral Reef Art Project, An Evening of Corals & Conservation, and a lecture titled 329 Miles in the Drendel Auditorium.

The Original Coral Crusader

Shari Regenbogen Ross has always been a passionate advocate for our planet. After graduating from college with degrees in environmental studies, art and education she created and directed programs and camps for children combining art, environmental stewardship, and outdoor experiences. Her work for non profit organizations raised funds, created sponsorships and grew awareness as development and marketing director.

Though Shari lives in Colorado: a state without a coastline, she is an enthusiastic, experienced scuba diver and is certified in coral restoration. An artist, she creates coral-inspired pieces that have been exhibited and sold across the United States. She applies her experiences and perspective to raise awareness and support for coral as a citizen environmentalist. Shari knows the importance of our oceans, and wants to make a positive impact on our blue planet.
